Teachnet Institute Grant Lesson Four:
Creating Political Cartoons with Adobe Photoshop and the Gotham Gazette

This unit will help students develop critical thinking skills necessary to analyze a news article and create a political cartoon based on the main idea, setting, symbols and people surrounding the issue.

Students will select a daily news article from the Gotham Gazette and use a graphic organizer to map out the important components of the issue. Next, they will choose images from the Creative Commons library that symbolize those components. Using Adobe Photoshop, students will turn those images into cartoonish line drawings. Finally, students will arrange the images and add text captions to create a final political cartoon.
